The County Fair and 4-H – Baraboo, MI

We thought it would be nice to visit the Sauk County Fairgrounds and actually it turned into a full blown experience of it’s own! The Fair was in Baraboo, WI (about 10 miles from Wisconsin Dells).

Half of the Fairground was the carnival and the other was the Future Farmers of America and 4-H club competition. Talk about responsible young people. I’ve never seen animals so clean, groomed, and with young adults doing 95% of the care and maintenance for them.

Bathing station!

Understandably the judging was soon, so everyone was bathing animals! They weren’t only judged on appearance, but they are also judged on marketability to be sold to the public one day for food or breeding (and a host of other things based on the animal).

And then I spotted this! The Rabbit and Poultry Barn!!

I found my people!

When we were back home a few weeks ago… someone asked me if I missed all the animals and I said no, but there are those times. I was glad to be able to walk through, see the rabbits and chickens, and walk away!

I got my chicken fix and could leave the barn without having to clean it out, gather eggs, look for snakes, re-bed it, or anything! I also got to swoon over some beautiful Black Copper Marans and various colored Orpingtons! The Buff’s were the most popular at the fair. I’ll give it to these kids – they are raising some fine chickens!

Beautiful markings on this Wyndotte!
Smut nose meat rabbit… raised hundreds of these!

Then, Trapper spots his favorite place!

I never liked raising pigs… Trapper loved it! Hmmm….

I guess goats will be goats… they are so inquisitive. The ones we raised were just as nosy as these guys.

And check the sheep and cows out! Some of the sheep had “covers” on (I guess to help keep them clean?) I’m not sure and look at this perfectly groomed cow! In another stall, I saw this little boy laying with his calf and his big sister comes over and announces, “You know she’s gonna kick you in the head.” (Talking about mom cow standing beside calf). He shrugged the whole thing off and snuggled on up to the calf. Hilarious!

The sheep on the right had a fancy cover on!

The little carnival was fun to walk around in and the day was done. Tons of fun and zero costs!

That was pure simple fun!

  1. Packed.

    1. It really wasn’t too bad. That last picture was on the way out before it got packed!
