Anxious to Explore Yuma, AZ

Yuma, AZ has been on our radar since before our house sold in 2018 and we hit the road. Just like Quartzsite, AZ was on our radar for various reasons…. so is Yuma.

What’s so special about Yuma? Why do the “snowbirds” flock here (pun intended)? These were questions we had and we want to find out!

But, we don’t have the answers yet…. and we’ll keep you posted! In the meantime, we find ourselves arriving in the Yuma area! We choose to stay our 14 days at Suni Sands Encore Resort through our Thousand Trails and Encore membership; which cost us for these 2 weeks, out-of-pocket, $0. We’re not being Desert Dwellers for a couple weeks… as we have full hook-ups and electric. It’s nice to mix it up once in a awhile.

Before we arrived in Yuma proper…. out in the desert, 15 miles from MX and 11 from Southern California…. we see this…. Acres and Acres of lettuce, cabbage, and broccoli! Are you kidding me? I need to research this! Talk about crop rotation! I’ve always wondered where the lettuce was grown for the country during winter months vs. the hot house or green house growers. I found my answer! It’s grown in Yuma!

Some how or way… I’m going to take you all on a tour of where your leafy greens come from. This has amazed me! I went on a short drive today and literally got lost in the industrial area of Yuma where Dole and Foxy are represented and packaged. Lots of refrigerated warehouses, crop folks are working, packaging all that lettuce up and all that packaging is going on in the field – mind you! Organic labels are represented, packaging you see in the store everyday are represented here!

My homesteading background isn’t going to let this story go quickly. I have a lot of picture taking here and maybe even a video. We also have other missions extending from Yuma – which we’ll talk about and the actual reasons we made the trip down (other than the 75 degree weather)!

As I’m writing this post, I see a “dart” of something from the ceiling… are you kidding me???? A stink bug?

I know folks in our home states of SC/NC/TN think these annoying things are common to their areas… but no, their not… they are all over! I have no mercy at this point. Grab a paper towel and squish – deal with the stink (like a skunk) and move on!

The map above is today’s travels. Short trip but lots to learn. I’m looking forward to our two weeks here and maybe longer. Who knows. Stay tuned!
