Oh yes! The beach! I’ve watched a hundred YouTube video’s about this place and I can now say – I’ve stayed here!
This is a very unique place. The county maintains it; it has a bath house (showers not working as current writing), restrooms, and garbage collection. All for free! And we had awesome Verizon coverage here (for anyone curious.)
You can drive for a few miles down the beach and there are historical markers, monuments, and nice covered pavilion picnic areas. The beach area is not a typical “sandy beach”… it’s more crushed shells than sand – which makes it super easy to drive on without the fear of getting stuck.
I tried researching what this place had been in the past but I couldn’t find anything. We met a couple of campers who have spent the last 4 or 5 years coming to Magnolia to “winter-over”. Most fascinating is that both of those couples said they typically stay from October to March!
For the tourist – there’s nothing to do here. Other than long walks on the beach!
For the RVer here are some things you might want to know.
- Verizon works great here.
- The beaches are solid crushed shell and easy to navigate/maneuver.
- Plenty of space to turn around, etc. First come, First served.
- You don’t have to worry about the tide. This is Matagorda Bay and the tide only changes a few inches.
- One convenience store is located here and a little make shift laundry facility to the left of the store.
- Lighthouse RV in Port Lavaca, TX has a dump station and potable water for $10.
- Port Lavaca is about 10 miles away and it has everything you need.
- General Delivery mail is accepted at the Post office on Half League Rd.
We were here from January 30 through February 11, 2019. The weather was only nice a few of those days – there was a huge cold front that moved in bringing lots of rain and wind.
One night the wind was blowing 25-35 mph and our slide toppers sounded like sail boat sales in heavy winds! The RV was rocking back and forth and I really thought we should hook up to the truck! It took both of us to hold the door, from blowing off the hinges, just to walk outside.
But those few nice days made up for all the crappy ones.
Until the Generator pull start broke rope! Uh oh!
It was more than time to get out of Magnolia Beach. It was cloudy, rainy, windy – our solar set up wasn’t getting enough sun and now the generator was only working a little. We pieced it back together and printed an Amazon return label. Defective!
(UPDATE: March, 2019) We did receive a full refund from Amazon for the generator.
