It’s been thirteen months since we said good-bye to our house in SC and moved, fulltime, into an RV.
The first year we zipped back and forth and up and down the country…. seeing as much as we could see and as quickly as we could. However; 2020 caused us to take pause.
Naturally, there was a pandemic going on, tons of uncertainty, and lots of changes for everyone.
For the first time ever we actually had/have reservations from December 7, 2020 thru January 12, 2021. We’ve never made reservations for that long! What does that say about us?
It might first say we’re being frugal over the holiday season. Or, secondly, it may say we’re just cheap!
So we arrived in TX two and half days after leaving my son’s house in NC. One of these travel day nights were spent in a Shelton’s Fireworks parking lot (there were lots of 18-wheelers there so we think it was either an overflow area or weekend trailer drop off). No one bothered us and we got back on the road the next morning.
The next night was spent at a Rest Area which was awesome! We are fans of Rest Areas for overnight stops.
We arrived at our Campground… Rainbow’s End in Livingston, TX. Because we are members of Escapee’s we had 2 free nights of camping with our membership and they had a special for 6 nights and 1 night free. We took advantage of it.
We paid $158 for 6 nights and got 3 for free bringing our total nightly cost down to about $17. Not bad for full-hook-ups. Since this campground is the homebase for Escapee’s… we were able to get our mail, get a couple packages, and do all the laundry! Laundry is pretty cheap at some Campgrounds. This one was $1.25 wash and $1.00 to dry. Not bad! I paid almost $5 to wash in Lake Havasu City, AZ…. just sayin’ Washing is always more expensive than drying.
After 9 days here… our time was up. So, we packed up and headed a couple hours south to Lake Fayette Oak Thicket Park in Fayetteville, TX just about 11 miles outside of LaGrange, TX.
Why did we come here, you ask? We’re cheap!
Not really, our 2019 hosting job with Recreation Resource Management in the UP of MI presented us with a coupon for a free 14 night stay at any Recreation Resource Management managed campground. Well, low and behold – I found that coupon, called them up and made a reservation! And believe it or not – the campground was just barely out-of-route for us. How cool was that? I’m glad I found that coupon because it expires 12-31-2020!
So, we’ll be here until 12-30-2020 and then move on further south in TX.
I know I call us cheap but we really don’t spend a lot of money on camping fees. We haven’t found the need. But, I will say, if you’re vacationing… that’s another story…. you can spend, in touristy area’s, as much as you want to… $45 – $125/nt and beyond. But we’re not vacationing and that’s the difference I talk about here.
Let me show you around:
And yes, Trapper and I went and bought an RV sized Christmas Tree!
