Roosevelt Lake & Tonto National Forest

We decided to change things up a bit and move towards the high desert. Roosevelt Lake seemed interesting and a friend of ours recommended it. So, to Roosevelt Lake we headed!

Getting from point A to point B in Arizona is a treat in itself. The scenery is gorgeous! There are so many canyon passes and 6-8% grades are not uncommon.

We found the lake and made our way onto Bermuda Flat.

This is dispersed camping (you can see campers right along the shore).

This is not free camping although it is dispersed and the only amenities are porta-toilets. There is a Tonto Pass that’s required and you can buy these at local businesses (such as the IGA in Tonto Basin. The cost is $8 per day and the ranger does come through to check.

If you come here to camp be sure and stop at the Visitor’s’ center for all the details. They are super helpful and there are several campgrounds in this area to choose from.

Our first spot we parked in wasn’t the greatest so the next day, while talking to the Ranger, we asked about the empty Camp Host spot. She said, “Sure, no problem! We don’t have a host here anyway right now.” So, we moved and love it here!
