The Truck Saga and an Emergency Fund

Yep, we’re still in Wickenburg, AZ.. The truck left us here and the weather turned crappy more north, so we decided to stay here.

In this case, we’ve been here for two weeks because of the truck. So what was up with the truck?

It’s a 2008 Chevy Duramax Dually with all that pollution control stuff on it. It’s never re-genned the almost two years we’ve owned it. We knew something wasn’t right, especially undertow. So, Desert Diesel was accommodating to us – picking us up and taking us to our rental car place and eventually loaning us a truck! How awesome is that?

Second time to the shop… Trapper was headed there to talk to the guy that programmed the truck, and the monitors started going crazy and the truck went back into limp mode (without being under tow!) Later in the day, the guys at Desert Diesel called and said, “Your truck isn’t getting any fuel pressure. It’s a wonder you ever made it across country!” That’s not really what you want to hear from a reputable mechanic.

We knew, embarking on this adventure, there would have to be an emergency fund for mechanical and towing from really remote areas.

Our tow package paid for itself in Livingston, TX (through GoodSam.com) with the truck being towed twice – it more than paid for itself.

But the fact remains over a two week period we spent roughly $4200 on the truck. Yikes?????? Yea, pollution control stuff taken care of, fuel pump, filters all taken care of. Truck seems to be good and by Monday – she’ll be back under load. We’ll see…. fingers crossed!
