We needed somewhere close to Dallas to stay/park/camp. But most campgrounds were $55+ a night and sorry – we’re not paying that!
We found Loyd Park Campground at Joe Pool Lake – which was only 25 miles (give or take) from Dallas. We needed and wanted to get to Dallas to see the JFK Library and the Stockyards plus it had been 9-10 months since Trapper had seen his family and they were all in the vicinity.
So, I made reservations online and we showed up. The website said $20 a night but with a Good Sam membership it was 10% off making it only $18/night with water and electric at site and a dump station upon arrival or exit!
However; the part I missed was the $10/day vehicle FEE! What? How’d I miss that???? Upon check-in, I was a little shocked and realizing my shock, the kind lady asked my husband – “Are you a veteran?” Trapper said Yes and they charged us $5/day – making the total cost only $23/night.
Ok, we can live with that for 3-4 nights.
It’s hard to choose a site based on an online map. I mean, you have to figure your backing skills… since Trapper has driven an 18-wheeler for years now, his backing skills are excellent, but he doesn’t like blind backing (from the passenger side if you will). I don’t like blind backing because I can’t stay in the mirror view on the appropriate side long enough to help because everything is backwards to me. And he doesn’t really need my help backing anyway. I think he puts me out there to make me feel needed, but it causes me anxiety. All I actually do is look for stumps, bumps, trees, etc. and try to keep him clear of those things.
Pulling in here was pretty simple because it was a drivers- side back in. He just jackknifed the trailer in there, backed up, we were happy!! Look at this spot for $23/night!
Awesome parking for the truck, for the camper, great covered picnic area on our spot, great spot for the dog, no one within arms distance, plenty of provided places to dispose of trash, close to Dallas/Fort Worth, great bath house with hot showers… what more could you want?
But wait! I’ve said before we have a water on board and hot water – why would we consider a “public” place. Well, we also have waste tanks on board. And all that used water has to go into our tanks and when we’re paying for a place to camp and they have good facilities – we use those instead – saving our space in our tanks. (Plus we both carry a cheap pair of flip flops to use in public showers/restrooms!)
If you want to come to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and not spend a fortune – check this place out! You won’t regret it!
